Paola Calderon- Outline

Another Skyscraper for the Grand Central Zone

The Fifty-Three Story Lincoln Building was being erected. The building is opposite of the Grand Central Station and facing Venderbilt Avenue.
It covered the old Lincoln storage warehouse; it was a landmark for New York, which was the first of New York City. It was secured by thousands of strangers arriving through the Grand Central Station.
The new building was going to be 900,000 square feet and the rent will be $4,528,000. It will have thirty elevators, a restaurant, two subway entrances with direct connection to all subway lines and the Grand Central Station.
The building was being built by Dwight P. Robinson & Company from plans by J.E.R Carpenter and association.
With the new building are the Hotel Belmont in the east and the Heckscher building in the west.

Chrysler Building 809 Feet in Height

The tallest building will cost $15,000,000.
The Chrysler Building was being under construction on the east side of Lexington Avenue block front between Forty-third and Fort-fourth Streets.
The building is 809 feet high, making it the tallest building in the world, next to the 792 feet of the Woolworth Building.
The elevators will be constructed vertical transportation and will be the first in the world to be constructed like that. It will be designed to run as rapidly as 900 feet a minute. The nonstop schedule would run the entire distance in less then a minute.
11,000 people can comfortably be housed in the offices and they will have 150 employs working traffic. The total amount of space that it will take is 37,555 feet square. The front will be 167.2 on Forty-Second Street; 210.10 on Lexington Avenue and 205 feet on Forty-Third Avenue.
Sixteen stories would be 182 feet without any setback. First setback will be eighteen feet for the next seventeen stories. The volume of the entire building including the tower is fifty-six stories. The dome is twelve stories so the entire building will be sixty-eight stories.
There will be floodlights in each of the four corners of the terrace on the fifty-sixth floor and on top of the dome. On top of the skyscraper there will be a star with thirteen points. It will be mounted by a figure sixteen feet high.
The great hall will run parallel to Lexington Avenue, north and south. The entrance will be 20 feet wide and 40 feet in height. The hall will be 100 feet long, 32 feet wide and 26 feet in the corners.
The subway entrance will be built on the forty-second street and forty-third street corners.

Chrysler Building Escapes City Taxes

The sixty-eight story Chrysler building is being built on the east side of Lexington Avenue, between Forty-second and Forty-third streets and has been raised in advance of completion at $14,000,000. Leasehold will be free of city taxes unless they put the old law in which the land and building from taxation is changed.
They were investigating how the Chrysler Building will not pay a tax directly to the city on the project, under a contract; it will pay in addition to the ground rental a sum almost equivalent to the taxes to Cooper Union.
In 1859, by special legislative act, Cooper Union received tax exemption on all land and buildings. Cooper Union has defended several efforts to have its holdings placed on the tax lists.
The city attempted to tax the property upon which the Chrysler Building will stand failed and the court decision interpreting the law covering all holdings of the Copper Union whether used by the organization for educational purposes.
Henry M. Goldfogle was questioned about that Chrysler Project and admitted that he had “ordered a research” in his office to determine the history of tax-exempt tract and the rulings under which the old law was upheld as a “possible future action.”
The Chrysler structure was scheduled to be completed in May, 1930.

Chrysler Building Now Tallest Edifice

Tower height of 808 Feet passes Woolworth Structure by Sixteen Feet.
The Chrysler building surpasses the 792-foot elevation of the Woolworth Building by 16 feet.
The Chrysler Building wasn’t going to be the tallest building because they were doing the Bank of Manhattan Building on Wall Street which they planned to built it to be 840 feet high.
The main entrance of the lobby is fan shaped, the elevator will run a speed of about 1,000 feet a minute and the dome will be an enclosed observation gallery.

Chrysler Building Opens

Hundreds of visitors went to visit the Chrysler Building and the elevators were kept busy, carrying passengers as far as the sixty-seventh floor of the seventy-seventh story structure.
Among the people that went to visit the building were several students from Lehigh University’s electrical engineering classes.
Some tenants have moved to their offices already and among the people that were taking large spaces was the Texas Company, which occupies the spaces from sixteenth to the twenty-ninth floor.

The Miracle of Mounting Skyscrapers

They had to destroy a building in order to do the Woolworth Building.
New York is full of mysteries.
The lower and midtown sections of Manhattan are the places where all the building were at.
